Before any significant breakthroughs or investments were made to civilization, people already had quite a fondness for art. Ever since the discovery of the first illustrations made by cavemen, art continues to be an impressive creative outlet to express one’s thoughts and emotions on a blank canvas. With that said, it comes as no surprise that we have been introduced to many works created by figures who possess quite a talent in this field. Of course, like music and films, artworks are categorized by genres, and for this article, we’ll be talking about six of the world’s finest contemporary artists.

Banksy – Balloon Girl

To some degree, any tangible object can be a canvas for one’s artwork. Well, for Banksy, his medium of choice is whatever walls the city’s infrastructures can provide. Starting around the ‘90s, Banksy has since created numerous intriguing and eye-catching pieces, one of which is his ever-iconic Girl with Balloon. First found in 2002 under London’s Waterloo Bridge, with another variant spotted not long after in Shoreditch, East London, The Balloon Girl shows a little girl reaching out for a heart-shaped balloon. With that said, the illustration is often interpreted in two different ways: the girl is trying to grab the balloon, or she let go of it, setting it free.

Yayoi Kusama – Narcissus Garden

Like many things, newcomers to the art scene often follow a series of guidelines to help them get the feel of things. Even so, these guidelines are just that – guides. Through the years, many artists have taken credit for introducing something new to the game. One such figure is Yayoi Kusama, well-known for her work, Narcissus Garden. Composed of around 1,500 mirrored orbs scattered in a particular area, Narcissus Garden is arguably one of the earliest works to be considered as installation art, a category that mainly uses 3D objects. As its title suggests, Narcissus Garden is inspired by Narcissus’ mythology and allows its viewers to discover a new perception of themselves and their current environment.

Jeff Koons – Balloon Dog Series

Another artist fond of using 3D objects, Jeff Koons, is often well-known for the many sculptures he’s made through the years. Besides garnering him acclaim and recognition, Jeff’s sculptures have also earned him quite a fortune. In fact, one of his biggest investments would undoubtedly be the Balloon Dog, with the orange-colored variant auctioned in 2013 for an astounding $58.4 million! A sculpture that’s reminiscent and nostalgic, this artist’s Balloon Dogs are often considered a reflection of one’s almost-forgotten childhood joys. Although interpretations can vary from person to person, one thing’s for certain: these large figures will almost always attract passersby.

David Hockney – A Bigger Splash

More often than not, many of us opt to take pictures of various moments we want to remember for years to come. Well, one such person who also follows this sentiment is David Hockney. After getting his college degree, the British painter spent some time in Los Angeles and honed his craft. Along the way, he made what is now considered his most iconic piece, A Bigger Splash. Fascinated by how splashes “become something else” when photographing them, Hockney decided to recreate the phenomena as a painting. Although it has somewhat of a minimalist aesthetic, the work took him two weeks to finish, and that’s because of all the detail he placed on the titular splash.

Gerard Richter – Abstraktes Bild Series

Although many artists have presented works that show an impressive representation of real places and people over the years, the art scene has also introduced plenty of pieces that rely on its creator’s imagination. With that said, one such person that’s often given credit for his contributions in the abstract genre is Gerard Richter. Among the many achievements he has made throughout his entire career, Richter is best known for introducing the art scene to the squeegee technique, a process he also used to create his highly-acclaimed series of artworks, Abstraktes Bild, which is a series of colors and patterns that seem organized yet so random. Abstraktes Bild undoubtedly evokes a variety of thoughts and emotions to whoever has the honor of seeing it.

Takashi Murakami – Flower Ball

At a young age, Takashi Murakami already had a passion for creating art, thanks to his love of anime and manga. With his talents improving through the years, Murakami has garnered a high degree of recognition for his artworks. Among his many creations, the painter is often known for this colorful piece titled Flower Ball. Although it seems like it’s an orb filled with flower patterns, the Flower Ball, in actuality, is just a 2D artwork expertly designed to look like a round object. One thing’s for sure, though: the flowers and the happy faces they have surely give this piece a wholesome vibe.
